This survey will show how the elements in design that make up a painting, sculpture.1. You will learn to recognize the possibilities of visual communications.2. You will know the elements of design and how the manipulation of these elements may change the effects on the viewer.4. Your awareness to areas of intellectual and intuitive endeavor in the visual arts will be awakened with the hope that you may wish to develop this area further at another time.PROCEDURE:1. In the Design Studio we will meet to work on practical problems and projects related to the lectures. We will use a limited number of materials to gain a hands-on experience of artistic techniques and possibilities.2. A term research paper will be required containing no more than four typed and double-spaced pages. It may be on practically any subject within the art field. More information will be given.Classroom decorum:
- Students are expected to attend class on time. Tardiness and absences will be noted and reported to the Dean of Students. You may be failed or be asked to leave for repeated absences or tardiness. Five absences lowers your grade by one full grade point. Tardiness is viewed as an absence.
Study groups are advised. EXAMS: The exams will be testing on information that you have gathered, primarily, from the lectures . You will be expected to remember the names of artists and their styles, characteristics and influences. They will be mostly multiple choice questions and simple answer. Some of the quizzes will have one or two essay questions that must be answered in complete sentences. I will not grade down for spelling or punctuation but I must be able to make sense of your answer. You must be able to write your answers clearly.By the end of Introduction to Art you will learn that art making will help you as a problem solver, just like business people, software designers, scholar, repair people, or coaches and athletes. Artists use creative and critical thinking, the physical capacities of the body, and materials and technologies, to produce visual objects that tell a story, communicate an emotion, experience, or a variety of philosophical, political, religious, or aesthetic ideas.Requirements of every assignment include:
- On-time completion of project, presented at the beginning of class for discussion
- Use of assigned materials, format, and techniques
- Participation, effort, and individual development – an important part of this is coming to class
- All work should be signed and dated on the front. Work must be neatly and squarely trimmed. I will demonstrate in class.
Attendance: You must attend class on time. It is hard to successfully complete the studio projects without direction and help.Two unexcused studio absences are allowed. The following penalties apply to your grade for each unexcused absence over two.3 absences = -.1 points= 3.9 highest possible grade4 = – .2 points = 3.8 highest possible grade, etc.Excused absences are major medical emergencies, funerals, etc. at my discretion. These absences must be documented. If you know in advance you will be out, please tell me in class so I can give you the homework. When you miss a class it is your responsibility to obtain and complete any missed assignments. If a project is due on a date you are absent, it is your responsibility to show me the project at the beginning of the next class.Term requirementsStudents are required:
- Students are required to write a short paper.
- Read all reading assignments.
- Assignments must be handed in on time.
- Participate in assignments and exercises during class time.
- Participate in the critiques.
- Art museum field reports will be one mandatory visits to art museums and or galleries
- The final grade will be based on research paper, number of completed studio projects, quizzes and attendants and sketch book..

Tell them the brushes are for acrylics. You want ones that hold their shape and aren’t too soft, but you don’t want a bristle brush.Chemical warning: All artists material have some health risk and should be used with proper safety precautions.
